The Number 40 Hand Saw

Features: Spring Steel Blade, Beech Handle.

Estimated Date of Manufacture: 1861-1884

The No. 40 handsaw is one of Peace's earliest saws. The only examples I've encountered all have split (spanner) saw nuts and stamped logos, both indicators of early saws. The No. 40 does not appear in the 1884 or 1895 Peace catalog, thus I assume it was discontinued sometime prior to 1884. I have several examples of this saw, all slight different. The earliest saws have the "VULCAN" medallion without the familiar arm and hammer logo and no patent date. I believe this medallion dates to the mid-1860s.

Another hallmark of an early 1860s-70s Peace saw is the die-stamped arm and hammer logo on the blade as seen below. I have seen this mark on only a handful of handsaws and one backsaw.
