Millers Falls No. 97 Ultimate Breast Drill. .
If I had to pick a favorite manufactured old tool, it would probably be the Millers Falls No. 97. It’s the most over-engineered, gizmo-laden boring tool ever created. It’s truly an engineering marvel. The drill has five drive modes, selected by turning an adjuster between the gears. Plain mode is simple- moving the chuck as you’d expect clockwise and counter-clockwise as you turn the crank. It also features a Left-Hand and Right-Hand ratchet, again fairly straightforward . The real beauty is in the “continuous motion” modes, described as Left Hand Onward and Right hand Onward. In these modes the chuck moves in one direction regardless of what direction the handle is turned.- really useful when you are drilling in a corner or other restricted area.To top it all off, the drill speed in any of these modes can be changed from fast to slow (about 1:1 to 1:3) by the simple manipulation of an adjuster on the crank arm. It’s just cool stuff. All of that functionality is packed into a heavy-du

The chuck and ratchet work perfectly. This is a 10in brace, a good general-purpose size. It's a perfect user.

Millers Falls No. 1 Cigar Spokeshave.
The Millers Falls cigar shave is an invaluable tool- it's one of those rare tools that will do a job almost no other tool will do, and it does it extremely well. This shave is capable of working very tight radiuses that no other tool can tackle. This particular example is the best I've found. It has two things going for it- it retains almost perfect original nickel plating and red paint in the throat. The rosewood handles are flawless. Secondly, the blade is honed to a mirror finish, hair-shaving sharp and ready to work. The one fault with this sort of shave is that the blade can be a bit of a pain to sharpen. It's a moot point with this example, it will be ready to work out of the box. It would be virtually impossible to find a better working example.

They work well on all sorts of wood. The wood bodies are much more comfortable to hold for long periods of time than the metallic versions. It's a beautiful shave that will make an excellent user.

I recommend using some sort of grinding jig like the Veritas with hand-crank grinders like these- they make it much easier to grind an accurate bevel while turning the crank with one hand. Replacement 4in wheels of various types can be found from supply houses like McMaster-Carr. An excellent working hand-crank grinder.

7/8in Casing Molding Plane by Lindsey.
J.F. and G.M. Lindsey made planes in Huntington, MA from 1856-79. This plane cuts a nice ogee along the edge of a board. It is used upright with the fence running along the face of the board, rather than referencing the face like a normal ogee. This makes it a terribly easy plane to use- just hold it vertically, no spring angle to check, and plane until it stops. It makes it difficult to use on end grain though. It's an ideal profile to use along a shelf edge, table top, and elsewhere. The plane is in excellent condition with a perfect blade- sharp with no pitting at all.

It is sharp and ground perfectly to match the profile. The boxing is perfect as well- straight and complete. The body is clean, the blade is clean with no pitting and it's nearly full-length. Solid Worker 1/4in Center Bead Molding Plane by Denison.
This plane was made by Gilbert W. Denison in Winthrop, CT between 1868-84. The plane cuts a 1/4in bead away from the edge of a board. The plane is in excellent working condition. The body is fairly clean with a few minor chips. The blade is perfectly clean with avery sharp bevel and not a speck of pitting. The boxing is dead straight and level- something rare to find on a vintage side bead. There is one chip out of the boxing back towards the heel but it isn't cracked through, and won't pose any sort of problem. A great user center bead in a useful size.

1/2in Side Bead by Marples and Sons.
This will be a good usable side bead with a little bit of work on the blade. The plane has a bold Marples mark at the toe. The body is clean with no chips or cracks. The boxing is perfect, showing no wear and absolutely no warp. The blade is bedded at a steep 55 degrees, perfect for hardwoods with trick grain. The back of the blade does have a few areas of light pitting that will need to be lapped out. It's a smal blade and this shouldn't take long, and will result in a great user plane.

Pair of Small Side Beads by Sims of London.
These two planes have always been together, sharing the same set of at least three owners' marks. Both planes have the Sims, London mark. Joseph Sims worked in London from 1814-34 according to Goodman, however, his mark appears have been used later than 1834 by Atkin & Son. Whenever these planes were made they are an excellent working pair. The smaller cuts a 1/8 in side bea, the larger 1/4in. These are two of the most popular sizes for most work. Both are in excellent ready-to-work condition. The beech bodies have some grime and imprints of former owners' hands, but no chips or cracks. The boxing in both planes is straight and free of cracks. The boxing around the mouth, where it tends to wear the most, shows little wear. Both blades are bedded at a steep 55 degrees, perfect for hardwood. Both blades have clean, lapped backs and very sharp bevels. They should work well right out of the box. A great pair of planes to put to use right away.

Excellent, Ready to Use 1/2in Dado Plane by D. Malloch.
This 1/2in dado plane is in excellent working condition, tuned and honed, ready to go. The beech stock is in excellent shape with no chips or cracks and just the normal toolbox dings you'd expect from a 100 year old molding plane. The nicker blades are long and sharp. The main blade is very sharp and perfectly clean without pitting. The plane is dead straight, not warped like many dados. It has a steel depth stop which is regulated with a brass thumbscrew. It has the sideways-facing nicker wedge which is a great design. It's a very well made plane with lots of attention paid to details- the screws that hold the brass depth stop plate are even clocked. It is a fantastic user dado in a useful size that will work well right out of the box.

Crisp 7/8in Dado Plane by Sandusky.
This plane is unmarked but has the unmistakable notched wedge that Sandusky used. The plane is in excellent condition and shows little use. The plane body is made of dense, heavy beech. It is straight with no twist at all. The main blade and nicker are both clean and long, nearly full-length. The steel depth stop is regulated with a brass thumbscrew. This will be an excellent dado plane to put to use on larger case work, tool chests, etc., where thicker stock is used. Just hone the blade and nicker and it will be ready to go in minutes.

Excellent Matched Pair of Preston Hollow and Round Molding Planes.
These very well-made planes were made by Edward Preston and are in excellent condition. The blades are bedded at a high 55 degrees, slightly higher than York pitch. They are also skewed at a slight angle, perhaps 5 degrees. The planes cut an arc with a 1 1/8in radius. They were made for hardwoods and should work very well on the trickiest grain. The mouths on both planes are exceptionally tight. The blades are in good condition with some staining but no pitting. They will not take long to hone and use. Neither plane shows signs of much use. The bodies are crisp with no chips or cracks. The only flaw is some blue paint spilled on the hollow. An unfortunate accident that could be clean up with some stripper or scraped off if you choose. As good a working pair as you will find.

Early 3/16in Side Bead by Mutter..
George Mutter was an 18th century planemaker and busienssman working in London from 1776-1799. This plane likely dates to the earlier part of that timeframe based on the wide chamfers and circular wedge finial. It has its blade bedded at an incredibly high angle, around 60 degrees. The blade is in decent shape with a hint of scattered pitting on the back. The boxing has a few chips but it's intact and straight. This 210+ year old plane still works. Without doing any work on the iron I was able to cut a nice bead on a test piece. Using a tool this old is a cool experience.

Huge Quirk Ogee and Bevel Molding Plane by J&L Denison. .
This plane cuts a large 2in wide by 7/8in. deep profile. This profile was commonly used for casing moldings and bears a faint resemblance to the generic, nearly flat casings found today in the box stores. The plane was made by John and Lester Denison in Saybrook, CT between 1832-40. The plane is in good condition overall. There are tight checks at the heel and toe. The body is clean with very few scratches or dings. The blade is very clean with no pitting. It's fairly sharp and matches the profile exactly. The boxing has a crack about 3 inches from the heel. The two pieces have separated a bit and are out of alignment by a few thousandths. It's a tiny defect and will take almost no time to fix, but it should be noted if you want to put the plane to use. It would also make a great showpiece since the profile allows it to sit upright on its own. An interesting, usable, early plane.

Steel-Sole Skew Rabbet by C. Nurse.
This is a 1 1/8in wide skew rabbet by Charles Nurse. The plane stands out for its thick steel sole which gives it a considerable heft. The sole looks good enough to be original to the plane. I've owned other Nurse steel-sole planes so it wouldn't surprise me at all if this were an option offered by the maker. The plane has seen a lot of use but is still in very good condition. The maker's mark, including the horse "Invicta" mark, it bold. The body is clean and still fairly crisp. The blade is short though, with about 3/8in left. It's enough to provide some good years of service, but it will need to be replaced at some point. The sole of this plane will ensure that this plane has many decades left in it.

Rare Matched Pair of Sash Ovolo Planes by Mathieson.
This is a matched pair of sash planes- one marked 1 the other 2 at the heel. They have always been together. They cut a nice 5/8in flat sash ovolo. The accepted thinking is that the planes were numbered so that sash makers could use one plane to hog waste then follow-up with a fine-set second plane. These planes were made by Mathieson. Both planes are in excellent condition. The blades are clean and the mouths quite tight. The bodies are free of chips or cracks. This is the first matched pair of sash planes I've had the good fortune to come across. Either plane would make a fune user.

Pair of Side Bead Molding Planes by King, Hull.
These planes have always been together- they were both made by King & Co. in Hull and were owned by a "J CLARK" (not me). The King family made planes from 1744-1907 according to Goodman. This one likely dates to 1864-1907. The larger plane cuts a 1/2in side bead. It is in near perfect condition with a sharp blade and nearly flawless body. The smaller cuts a 1/4in side bead and is in nearly as good condition. The only flaw is a tiny patch of pitting at the far side of the back of the blade- the part that gets buried in the non-escapement side of the plane and never used. It's inconsequential, but it bears mentioning. Both planes have irons bedded at 55 degrees, perfect for challenging hardwoods. Both will make excellent users.

This plane is in good condition- The body is nearly perfect with hardly a ding or scratch on it and without warp or twist. It will take a few minutes to get it running, but it will work well for years afterwards.

Pair of Mathieson Fixed Chamfer Planes.
These planes were both made by Mathieson. They perform one job- they put a chamfer along the edge of a board, and they do it very well. The smaller plane cuts a 1/4in deep chamfer, the larger 5/16in chamfer. These fixed chamfer planes are very scarce, and I've never seen a pair. Both planes have similar wear patterns and maker's marks and were found together, but I cannot definitively say that they have always been together. both planes are completely usable with good blades, boxing, and bodies. A nice pair of planes to add to your working collection.

Good Working Set of Hollows and Rounds.
This is a good working set of nine pairs of hollow and round molding planes. As found, the set consisted of sixteen matched planes made by Sandusky. There were two missing planes that I replaced and a few other issues that I will describe below. The original sixteen planes were all owned by a My. William Bourk. They were made by the Sandusky Tool Co and all bear the model number 92 on the toe. Most of the planes are in excellent condition. All of the blades are full-length, or close to it, and exceptionally clean with no pitting. A few of the planes had some problems and I have replaced these with matching planes in good working order. The planes are numbered with Sandusky's sizing system which doesn't match any other maker's so I will list the radius of the arc each pair cuts. I will describe each pair below in detail. There are also detailed pictures of each pair included in the photos.

No. 9 1 1/4in. Both planes are in excellent condition and show little or no use.

Early Stanley No. 18 Knuckle-Joint Block Plane.
This plane was one of the first No. 18s to be made. Both the cap and bed have the B Casting mark. The front of the knuckle-joint cap has the DEC.28.86 patent date on it. The adjusters all work perfectly and the body is decently clean. The plane has an overall dark patina to it but no rust or pitting. It just looks like a well-used old tool. The blade is quite clean and will sharpen up easily. Besides the Stanley stamp, it is also stamped "DAMAGED" vertically. I can't find any flaws with it at all. I will include a proper replacement blade with the plane in case you discover a problem with the original. It's a good, solid, user plane

Craftsman-Made Router Plane.
This router plane was likely the side project of a patternmaker. The body is massive- much larger than a Stanley 71. It is more than 11in wide which gives you a lot of surface area on either side of the blade. It holds a 1/2in flat blade with the standard locking and adjusting mechanism. It's not the prettiest, but it will work well.

This little scraper plane is made from figured maple. It is marked "N.E. Toolworks, Groton, CT". This was a company that sold planes made by Leon Robbins in the 80's and 90's. It'sa beautiful little plane that will work well for scraping small areas.

Stanley No. 81 Rosewood Sole Scraper.
Based on the color scheme, this plane might have been in a school's shop class or property of a shop. The nickel plating is nearly perfect and the rosewood sole has almost no scratches in it. The throat has been painted red and the outside of the cap a shade of yellow. These were probably shop colors to prevent the plane from going home with an employee or student. The blade is a replacement made of E.C. Atkins & Co. Silver Steel. It is clearly marked "No. 0" and retains a full etch and some sort of protective coating on it. The plane is about as good as they come, save the paint job. A perfect working scraper.

Norris No. 2 Infill Smooth Plane.
This is a pre-war Norris No. 2 smooth plane. It has a rosewood infill, open tote, 2 1/8in wide iron, and dovetailed round steel sides. The plane is a great working tool in ready to use condition. It has a few flaws that make it less interesting to collectors. The top of the tote broken and expertly repaired with no seam visible. If it weren't for the change in grain direction it would not be noticible. There is another crack at the bast of the tote which was also expertly repaired and very hard to spot (see photo for detail). The sides have some pitting which is merely a cosmetic defect. The blade is original, a massive parallel double iron made by I Sorby. Both the iron and inside of the infill body are stamped "OP". The cap has the Norris London mark and the toe is stamped "steel". The toe is marked with an "L WEST" owner's stamp. The blade has been honed and is harp enough to shave with. Nearly Mint Stanley No. 6 Fore Plane.
The poor No. 6 gets no respect. It's a good plane, a useful plane. Use it like a small jointer for shorter stock- no need to break out the monster No. 8 for that sort of work! Use it like a large jack for wider boards, or like a true fore plane for rough stock removal and dimensioning. This one is in close to mint condition. It has a clean body, perfect japanning, and a great rosewood knob and tote. The blade is perfectly clean and has the factory grind on the bevel. The adjusters all work well. This plane was made in the late 20s/early 30s and has the hallmarks of a pre-WWII plane including the lack of a rib at the heel and toe- the "MADE IN USA" behind the knob, the absence of color behind the embossed Stanley on the lever cap, and the square top blade. It's a great user plane, perhaps one of the cleanest I've ever come across.

Stanley No. 4 Smooth Plane.

This plane is a pre-WWII type 16, made from 1933-41, according to the type study, but the blade is stamped 147 indicating it was made in 1947. It's either a replacement blade or another example of why the type study is an excellent guide, but was not used by Stanley back when they were making these planes. Regardless of when it was made, the plane will be an excellent user. The body is crisp and clean with nearly perfect japanning. The rosewood knob ante tote are excellent with no chips or cracks. The tote features some especially crazy grain patterns. The blade is long, sharp, and completely clean with no pitting. The adjusters work perfectly. It's simply a great plane to put to use.

Gorgeous 10in Open-Handle Brass-Back Dovetail Saw by Robert Sorby.
This is a beautiful Robert Sorby brass-back saw. It has a thick folded brass spine with the distinct Sorby kangaroo trademark. The handle is beech and just perfect without a chip or crack on it. It fits my hand just perfectly which is the reason why I originally bought it some ten years ago. I've been paring down my collection of user saws lately and this one didn't make the cut.. The plate is 10inches long, 1 7/8in deep under the spine, and 12PPI. The teeth are a sort of hybrid I think- the rake is too relaxed to be called a true rip saw, but there is very little fleam. The plate is very clean with only a tiny bit of scattered light pitting. There are three broken teeth right at the toe so they won't affect use at all. It's also got plenty of depth if you want to re-tooth it to meet your requirements. I've used it quite a bit over the past ten years and I've always enjoyed it. It needs a touch-up sharpening but it still cus quite well as-is. It's a beautiful saw that works quite wel.

Early Richardson Open-Handle Bakcsaw.
This is a 10in open-handle backsaw by the Newark, NJ sawmaker Richardson. The saw is marked "Extra, Spring Steel, Warranted" marks which featured on their highest grade of saws. The saw has some issues, but is worthy of a restoration and to be put to use. The plate is 10in long and between 2 and 2 3/8in deep. The plate is dead straight. It has pitting on the front side but not the back. If the plate were sharpened rip the pitting would be less of an issue and the saw would work well for fine work like dovetails. The handle is made of beech and is attached with two split saw screws. The top horn is rounded off, the front botton horn has a small chip missing. The handle is tight to the plate and very comfortable to hold. With the proper teeth it will make a good user at an affordable price.

Early Henry Disston Table Saw.
This is a true rarity- I don't recall ever seeing a Henry Disston table saw before and this one is in great shape. This saw has the 1860-65 medallion and the plate is stamped with the Henry Disson (no Son or Sons) so we know it was made before Henry's son Hamilton joined the firm. The plate is 19in overall with a nib, a clear stamp, and 7PPI (as measured and stamped in the heel of the plate.). The apple handle is attached with two split nuts. The medallion was removed at some point but the handle is perfectly tight tot the plate now. There is minor chipping on the outer bottom horn. This is a deep coping saw with Pratt's patent blade locking mechanism. The handle is rosewood and very nicely shaped. The frame is in good condition. It will accept blades up to 4 1/2in long. This plane is marked I Sorby at the toe and has its original I Sorby double iron. The plane has a good body with no chips or cracks. The mouth is still tight for a wooden smoother. The blade is bedded at the standard 47 degrees. The blade back has some scattered pitting and discoloration. Steve Knight 2in Smooth Plane..
Steve Knight made innovative, high-performance wooden planes from ca. 2001-2008. His planes were different from almost everything on the market. They are based on the Krenov design but with a couple of interesting changes. First, he used an angled adjustable mouth block that could be lowered and levelled-off as the sole wears in order to keep the mouth insanely tight. He also added adjustable set screws to the sides of the plane through the plane's cheeks to help keep the blade aligned. His planes were laminated and used crazy thick, hard irons. This plane is made from Padouk with an Ipe sole, mouth insert, and strike block at the heel. The plane has a 2in. iron, measures 7 1/2in long, and weighs in at about 3lbs. I think the outer wood is padouk. The sole is Ipe. The blade is bedded at 47 degrees. The plane was made in Sept of 2006 (as stamped on the heel) and must have sat idle for the past eight years as there was some light rust on the iron. The iron cleaned up nearly perfectly and

Gorgeous Figured Apple Smooth Plane.
Here is a beautiful plane with an interesting iron- it needs a bit of work but it will be worth it. The apple body has tight, beautiful figure. There is a chip out of the sole just in front of the mouth. A patch could be inset into the sole to fix the chip and tighten up the mouth. A nice piece of jet black ebony would do nicely! The blade is marked "PMDF, Warranted, Cast Steel, Hoveys Patent". DATAMP lists a March 22, 1830 patent for a plane iron assigned to a W. Hovey. This single iron has a bit of pitting here and there, but it's sharp and will still work well. A gorgeous plane in need of a bit of TLC.
